Neighborhood Legal Services introduces Equal Justice Update, a periodic e-newsletter to share important news and updates about how – with your support – we help vulnerable people throughout Allegheny, Lawrence, Beaver and Butler counties access free, civil legal aid.
Providing Help in a Crisis
While those charged with a crime have a right to an attorney, there is no such guarantee in civil cases. People experiencing civil legal problems have to rely on free help, like that provided by Neighborhood Legal Services. Watch this two-minute video to see how your support helps NLS deliver free, civil legal aid and makes social justice accessible for all.
A Deluge of Unemployment Compensation Issues
Since the COVID-19 crisis began, over 1 million Pennsylvania residents have applied for unemployment compensation benefits and over half of those have been paid out. But that leaves many still waiting for help. Instead of reducing unemployment compensation (UC) services in response to stay-at-home orders and other pandemic-related shutdowns, NLS did the opposite.
“We created a new group of NLS attorneys to provide UC advice and representation to anyone calling with questions regardless of where they were in the application process,” said NLS staff attorney Catherine T. Martin. “We also alerted several job-related agencies like Career Link to let them know that we were in fact open for business and had expanded UC representation.”
As a generous supporter, you know that NLS is a vital component of the public response to and recovery from the current public health crisis. Your help allows us to do the important work we do. Without it, we couldn’t help protect a woman in an abusive relationship, secure needed benefits for a veteran, assist a single mother to establish a safe place to live, or help a senior citizen access healthcare services. Your dedicated involvement and continuous engagement with NLS is valued, appreciated and central to any success we provide.
By volunteering, your experience will help the most vulnerable in our communities’ access free, civil legal aid. As an NLS volunteer attorney, you’ll be part of an incredible team of dedicated and knowledgeable attorneys and help change lives for years to come. Whether you volunteer for just a day, or for a longer-term, we have flexible opportunities.
