NLS Appoints New Executive Director

Kris Bergstrom, a passionate legal advocate for the poor and under-represented, has been appointed Executive Director of NLS. “Kris has demonstrated vision, energy, and a desire to expand legal aid services in our communities. We believe her fresh approach and passion for the work will be an inspiration to the organization,” said Stephanie R. Reiss, Esquire, President of the NLS Board of Directors.

Help is Only as Good as Access

People with disabilities may use assistive technology – including screen readers, voice recognition software, and video relay services – to interact with digital content. However, many people with disabilities do not use aids and rely on the accessibility of digital content. NLS has created an Accessibility Guide, with generous support from the FISA Foundation, to help ensure information is accessible to all, including people with disabilities without any aids or assistive technology. Learn more about accessibility here.

Good Neighbors — Strong Communities

NLS’s Beaver and New Castle offices recently collected items for the Women’s Center and Arise, both organizations are domestic violence shelters that support clients of NLS. “This is the first year that our Beaver and Lawrence county offices have coordinated and arranged a donation effort like this and it’s our hope that we make this an annual tradition,” said Nikki Christopher, managing attorney for NLS. Winter Utility Moratorium

NLS works closely with organizations like the Pennsylvania Utility Law Project to ensure that low-income individuals and families are aware of their rights when it comes to utility companies shutting off customers’ electricity and other utilities due to nonpayment. “Families facing financial challenges keeping current on their utility bills due to COVID-19, unemployment or reduced hours can be assured that their homes will have electricity and heat throughout cold winter months,” said Attorney Jeffrey Braun of NLS. “On April 1, 2022 utility companies in the Pennsylvania can resume terminations of non-paying customers, as the annual winter shut-off moratorium lifts.” Learn more about NLS services here
